Antenna and radio design for cubesat
For the next generation of cubesats for AAU, it has been considered to redesign the radio. For this purpose the entire subsystem needs to be reviewed and/or redesigned, in regards to the antennas, the electronics, the protocols etc. This project proposal concerns the antenna and radio desing of a cubesat.
An analysis of the current platform could be made, in order to find the places that could be improved upon.
The areas that could be improved are primarily simplicity, higher reliability, higher efficiency and higher throughput.
Different antenna designs should be considered, to compare different mechanical designs and radiation patterns. Different frequencies and modulation types should also be chosen for the communication system.
To facilitate the actual end-to-end communication, a ground station radio and onboard radio must also be designed. Experience shows that a Software Defined Radio (SDR) might be nice for distribution purposes, but could prove more complicated to implement than a hardware radio. It could also be interesting to have changeable parameters in accordance to baudrate, AFC, filter bandwidth etc., which would be easy if a SDR is used. A prototype of such a SDR could be made using the USRP SDR.

This project proposal concerns the development of a new communication protocol for the satellite.
An analysis of the current platform could be made, in order to find the places that could be improved upon.
The protocol could be designed based on the current protocol, CSP (Cubesat Space Protocol).
Maybe a protocol with less overhead could be used, but error detection/correction should also be considered due to the high level of noise on a spacelink, and the time delay. Things such as sync-words should also be considered, as well as encryption.
